About the project

About ratethegod and our editorial standards

ratethegod is returning to a question first explored online in 2008: how would you rate god today? The current chapter starts with a public archive, launch updates and an invitation to help build the next version.

An archive first, a new series later

The original project published GodIndex and country-level views. Today’s website preserves the discoverable history and explains what the surviving material can support. Voting has not reopened, and historical participation figures are not presented as current users.

The archive is not a claim that the old platform, ownership arrangements or research programme have continued unchanged. New votes, when available, will need their own methods and time period. We will not bridge missing years with simulated activity. Read what is available now and what comes later.

Why we write god in lowercase

Our current brand leaves “god” lowercase to allow different interpretations of the question. It is a present editorial choice, not an assertion that everyone shares one concept of god or that every original headline used lowercase. Historic titles retain their wording where that helps identify a source.

The site does not claim to establish the existence, character or obligations of a deity. It is interested in how people respond to the question and how those responses can be understood.

How the archive is written

New archive articles are editorial analyses, not invisible replacements for the original authors’ words. We distinguish a published numerical claim, an archived display, an author’s interpretation and our own research proposal. Material dated 2008 or 2009 is labelled as historical context; the new editorial publication date remains visible.

We use original project reports and preserved captures where possible, and identify third-party commentary as such. A contemporary media mention is not an endorsement. A hypothesis is not a validated finding. When a source is missing, we say so.

Corrections and contributions

For factual corrections, send the page URL, the statement concerned and a source that supports the correction. For archive contributions, send a description and provenance before sharing files with personal information. We welcome independent scrutiny and would rather display an honest gap than an unsupported number.
